After owning “The Thirteenth Tale” for some time, I flew through the 406 pages. Its effectively-threaded stories are enthralling, with a voice that draws us in! A prolific authoress concealed her identity and chose someone to record her truth. Circumstances that facilitated utter hiding are strange and deep-rooted. As much as readers surmise parts, we are surprised again and again. I worked out the most complicated trick and a familial tie. Still, Diana Setterfield surprises us.

If you are into gothic romances, you will love this book. It has some good twists, but, my favorite part is when the doctor tells the heroine to read Sherlock Holmes.

Storytelling and books - their affect on us! The two readers were very good.

2011: Loved this Gothic tale of mystery and secrets. I figured out some of the secrets before the end, but the core secret that underpins the entire story wa

This one is as gothic as they get, just in case the constant references to Jane Eyre aren't enough for you. Dark, compelling, twisted. If that sounds good to you, you should like this one. ...more

A book that I've been wanting to read for years--I'm so pleased I finally managed to get a copy!

This was wonderful for the most part, just a few small quibbles* that stop me declaring it a favourite book. Still, I'll start with the (many) positives.

Sometimes with a book that has a story within a story, one of the tales is more interesting than the other - often by a wide margin. For me at least, that was not the case here. While the life story of Vida Winter is the more dramatic, dynamic one, I
