Wendy Webb's 2014 novel is atmospheric, with aspects of exceptional creativity. Four stars account for a delay before mysteriousness gears up and a minor but persistent issue. The protagonist's "stomach churns" in every scene. If editors don't cover redundancy, I ought to put out a shingle! I have an eagle eye for logic, like Julia not having many dresses. If someone offered to move everything I wished, wouldn't I pack all belongings, especially clothes?

Do you believe in ghosts? In Wendy Webb’s The Vanishing you may begin to think ghosts exist unless you already do. I believe in ‘ghosts’ and the paranormal, but The Vanishing’s setting of northern Minnesota’s wilderness area in winter where the protagonist, Julia Bishop, finds herself staying at the old sprawling mansion, Havenwood, where she hears nursery rhymes with no one present and sees figures in paintings moving away from the wall, you just might believe.
