If 13 year-old praise and appreciation, is meaningful to the authors and organizers of this event: may mine reach their ears! In spring 2005, like real bears out of hibernation: 62 statuettes were unveiled on our historic street, Broadway! The lawn of Manitoba's parliament building is at the Osborne Street end. The legendary Fort Garry Hotel is at Main Street. It is a leafy promenade around vehicular, pedestrian, and avian traffic. I didn't know the details until I unearthed this limited edition, early this year! Everyone spotted the polar bears. After Broadway, they parked at the sponsors' businesses. Now that I know who they are, I might see them anew.

The polar bears are beautiful, sweet, cute, whimsical, thought-provoking, and preciously original. A few cities have had mini monuments. I absorbed tremendous information from “Bears On Broadway: A Love Affair In Concrete”. The first is that the fundraiser and creator was Cancer Care Manitoba, for their 75th year! The second is that the response and how everything got done, was an unprecedented phenomenon!

They are concrete, made to last but a technique lightened their weight. Their paint was changed but dried faster and would not crack. The inspiring theme that arose is that at every speed bump yielded a better situation! For example, most artists work alone. The concrete polar bears demanded one stable workplace: the Princess Patricia barracks, open plan. Instead of shyness, was a lifetime memory with an artists' commune! Encouragement, assistance, and praise floated all around. I didn't pose with these polar bears but walked and rode by them often. Thanks to this souvenir, I have learned all about them.

Succeeding Tim Higgins's stirring write-up, are pictures of all the bears and their descriptions! I will cherish this book and am very happy to tell the public about the very special statuettes that decorated Winnipeg. Manitoba is home to polar bears in the north and at our city's zoo, in the south, we were home to the world's longest living polar bear, Debby. My parents showed her to me when I was a baby and I appreciated her as a grown-up. Our sweet Debby is the model for these portable monuments. She lived from 1966 to 2008! Debby is also the third-oldest in history, of all eight bear species! This treasured souvenir, with personal hometown meaning, is one of the most pride-filling I have ever read. ...more
