Great, great book. I was surprised by Eveline's condition, and it made for such an interesting and refreshing read. Loved it! She was a heoine with pluck, spirit, incredible courage and heart. I adored her. Graeme was such an amazing hero and leader. Not perfect, but perfect for Eveline. There's a scene in the end that brought tears to my eyes. I can't wait for the next book. ...more

King Alexander II is determined to have peace though two of his biggest allies, The Montgomery's & Armstrongs's, won't agree to end their ongoing feud, not for country or king. As a last resort the King decrees that Eveline of the Armstrong clan and Laird Graeme of the Montgomery clan are to wed. A marriage that will for all practical purposes ends the warring between the two strongest clans in Scotland.

Laird Graeme has taken a blood oath to rid the world of Armstrongs. How can he now marry his King Alexander II is determined to have peace though two of his biggest allies, The Montgomery's & Armstrongs's, won't agree to end their ongoing feud, not for country or king. As a last resort the King decrees that Eveline of the Armstrong clan and Laird Graeme of the Montgomery clan are to wed. Laird Graeme has taken a blood oath to rid the world of Armstrongs. How can he now marry his enemy especially when word has it that Eveline is daft and not of sound mind. Marrying her would end any chance of heirs for Graeme as he is not one to take advantage of a lass who is not able to be a wife in all ways. For the wellbeing of his clan he'll have to abide by the king's decree, though after meeting Eveline he has to wonder what form of trickery the Armstrongs are playing at.

Chose this book for a reading challenge. I'll admit I went in dragging my feet and ready to take one for the team until.....

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. With the recent popularity of Game Of Thrones I guess it fed into my medieval love of manly men and strong women characteristic of that day and era. The maneuvering and intrigue that resembles a chess match of sorts with each move resulting in different consequences for the actual people involved.

Loved the storyline and loved the interaction between the differing characters. Being forced by the king to marry. Ya, neither side wanted that but to defy the King is to be declared an outlaw so basically a powder keg waiting to explode scenario is set. Which side would break first and who would draw first blood. The suspense was just that. Suspenseful.

Yet, in the midst of all that a romance started between Eveline & Graeme. An interesting twist introducing a disability to the mix. I do feel the author handled that extremely well including the rationale surrounding the who/what/when/why for Eveline's character related to this. I did have a few concerns from a personal standpoint but to each their own so what I consider an issue, someone else might now.

The end result of reading this book is that it's revitalized my interest in historical romance which I thought would never happen. It might be due to the fact that the author did include a number of adult content scenes between the characters or it might be that the author is that good. Either way. Loved this book and plan to check out more installments in the series. cough, cough... Bowen

I loved this book. It wasn't as steamy as some of Maya's other novels, but it was definitely just as well written.
I sat here feeling every emotion that Eveline must have been feeling from the very beginning. The love she felt for her family and then Graeme, the shame, anger, disappointment that she felt when she realized exactly what was going on with his (Graeme's) clan members.

That being said she has to be one of the strongest and fiercest heroines that I have had the pleasure to read about ...more

I adored this book! I'd never read one of Maya Banks' books before, and I'm so glad I picked this one up! I was hooked from beginning to end!

The premise was a little hard to believe at first, especially at the beginning of the book - but it totally fits - Banks makes it work and it works well.
