**Audio Re-Read, 2024**

Perfection, again. I finally got some new headphones and it's the grass cutting time of the year! I can only imagine what I look like out there cutting the grass with the silliest smile on my face and the laugh out loud moments only Jory can provide. Until I'm not smiling.

I just know this will forever be a favorite. Forever.

While I did enjoy it, there were a few problems that left me feeling a little less satisfied than I normally do after reading one of her novels.

A Matter of Time is a four part series. This first novel encompasses books one and two, and I will warn you, ends on a cliffhanger. However, if you buy Volume 2 (books three and four), all issues are resolved. The book starts out with Jory Keyes witnessing a I am a big Mary Calmes fan, especially her Warder series, so I was looking forward to this book. While I did enjoy it, there were a few problems that left me feeling a little less satisfied than I normally do after reading one of her novels.

A Matter of Time is a four part series. This first novel encompasses books one and two, and I will warn you, ends on a cliffhanger. However, if you buy Volume 2 (books three and four), all issues are resolved. The book starts out with Jory Keyes witnessing a murder. He was just going to help a friend rescue her dog after leaving her abusive husband and walks in on a contract killing. The police arrive and save Jory, but his life is now in danger. Enter police detective Sam Kage, who starts to follow Jory around to protect him after Jory declines witness protection. The two men grow closer and eventually start a relationship, but Sam is confused because he doesn’t want to be gay. Conflicted, Jory and Sam vacillate between being boyfriends and not, all the while Jory’s life is in danger.

My overall problem with this novel wasn’t the plot. I found that very enjoyable, but rather with the characterizations, particularly Jory. I did not find him sympathetic, and quite frankly he wasn’t very bright. Why he would decline witness protection especially after assassins try to kill him multiple times made no sense to me. Also, everyone in the book loved Jory, he could do no wrong. I mean everyone: men, women, children, old ladies, dogs, and I am sure if the bad guy really thought about it, he loved Jory deep down too. That plot point got to be ridiculous after awhile. As for the whole subplot with Jory and his boss Dane, who sort of “adopted” Jory; I have no idea what that was about, but maybe the second volume will explain it.

Sam, the other love interest, while a jerk to Jory as he worked through his feelings, seemed to be more realistic. Here’s a guy who always thought he was straight and now…wham, he’s crazy about this guy he’s supposed to be protecting. Sam’s reaction seemed to be the only true focal point of the novel for me. Plus, I love Sam’s large and diverse family, who were all such flawed and well-rounded characters that I have to admit I was more on Team Sam than Team Jory by the end of the book.

Overall, this was not my favorite Mary Calmes book. Her hero in this one did not appeal to me as in her previous works. However, I am reserving judgment until I finish volume two, as perhaps Jory can redeem himself and win me over like Sam did.

Seriously, that ending, really???? That was the worse ending I have ever read, ever. Overall I loved these first two books, or volume 1. Yes there were times that I wanted to beat the shit out of both Jory and Sam. Jory was just a slut & treated his ex's like crap. Then he falls for Sam and all he wants is him. He also thought he knew better then everyone else. Sam just couldn't give in to what he felt for Jory & strung him along at times. And really he had to sleep with her?? Okay, off to the n ...more
