A much-anticipated new release from Mia Sheridan, who happens to be an auto-buy author for me. The blurb led me to believe it had all the makings for another 5-star read. There have been so many exceptional stories from Sheridan, but this time around I found myself facing disappointment. And I accepted it and chugged on – like I said, there have been so many “greats.” (Most of All You, Archer’s Voice, Becoming Calder, Midnight Lily, Finding Eden) Here, I find myself in the minority and while I d A much-anticipated new release from Mia Sheridan, who happens to be an auto-buy author for me. The blurb led me to believe it had all the makings for another 5-star read. There have been so many exceptional stories from Sheridan, but this time around I found myself facing disappointment. And I accepted it and chugged on – like I said, there have been so many “greats.” (Most of All You, Archer’s Voice, Becoming Calder, Midnight Lily, Finding Eden) Here, I find myself in the minority and while I didn’t exactly love this one, I didn’t hate it either. Because there was still a great deal to like and enjoy.

The first person narrative style seems to always work best for me. It did here as well in perfectly conveying the emotions of each the main characters. And having Callen’s voice certainly aided in his defense.

Princess Jessica was looking for her prince. At age eleven, she thought she’d found him in an old railroad car. But Callen was an unworthy of the title. He was very unlikable, and it took me to very near the end of the book to even think of forgiving his abhorrent behavior. He could be downright nasty. His reasoning came as a well disguised secret. Kudos for that achievement.

Jessie on the other hand was a forgiving princess. She proved her love time and time again. I thought Callen might break her at one point. But Jessie had the gift of strength and understanding and forgiveness. I had no trouble in appreciating and admiring all her good qualities and liked her from the get-go.

A secondary storyline in the form of historical writings is running simultaneously through Callen and Jessie’s. I’ll be honest in admitting that I did start skimming at the halfway mark as Jessie translated the letters. I was too wrapped up in finding out how Callen & Jessie’s story played out. I can now say that I’ve gone back and reread every single word of the book including Adelaide and Olivier Durand’s story told through those “ancient writings” that were remarkably worth the read. In all honesty, I believe waiting made them even more meaningful.

An absolutely outstanding Epilogue tied this beauty up in a silver bow. Mia Sheridan knows how to grab a reader from page one and doesn’t turn loose until the very end. No, it wasn’t my favorite, but it was well-worth the read and I’m glad I stuck with it.

Another emotional story by Mia Sheridan but I shouldn't be surprised because she never disappoints! Her main characters are often flawed or disabled in one way or another, largely due to actions of others, or they are misunderstood. But deep down they are good and it takes the right person to see it and bring it out.

Jessica and Callen's story was beautiful, despite the pain and misunderstanding in both their past and present lives. As hard as it was to see Callen be so self-destructive ...more
