For those of us who have read “Archer’s Voice” and wondered over the last seven years whatever happened to Archer Hale’s horrible half-brother, this is his story of the road to redemption. Mia Sheridan has done a fabulous job of bringing Travis Hale to accountability in a compelling and emotional story. And Haven Torres, who has her own demons to conquer, is the perfect fit for Travis.

Quick(ish) Review

I'm (generally speaking) all for a character-driven small town romance, so hearing that there was a sequel to Archer's Voice, I was definitely intrigued. This has been a real mixed bag, so I'll try to 'splain.

The Good: Give me a redeemed villain and I'll melt like butter in the hot summer sun, and Travis certainly had the potential to make all the melty bits happy. Now, I hadn't read Archer's Voice in seven years, and that's waaaaay too long for my poor recall to really feel ang Quick(ish) Review

I'm (generally speaking) all for a character-driven small town romance, so hearing that there was a sequel to Archer's Voice, I was definitely intrigued. This has been a real mixed bag, so I'll try to 'splain.

The Good: Give me a redeemed villain and I'll melt like butter in the hot summer sun, and Travis certainly had the potential to make all the melty bits happy. Now, I hadn't read Archer's Voice in seven years, and that's waaaaay too long for my poor recall to really feel anger or hate for Travis, which was probably a good thing. He was an asshat, but he wasn't irredeemable to me. This book takes great pains to really delve into his feelings and thoughts, much more so than Haven, so sympathizing with Travis was a snap.

The Bad: There's slow, character driven romance, and then there's slooooooow "Imma bout to fall asleep because nothing's going on." This was a little too boring for too much of the book.

I guess it's in the name, but as a romance, the focus was definitely on Travis and not enough on Haven. There are key character building scenes that play out from Travis' POV instead of hers and that made a difference. The lack of follow up from her perspective hurt the narrative, especially since she's supposedly "interested" in another character (not really, but it's not really clear until the very end).

Also, Haven having a Latinx last name (and her curly hair?) was the extent of the diversity, except for one supporting character. Plus the fact that in a very Caucasian Maine town the dark moment was essentially about shunning those very same Latinx folx? Just hit wrong for me as a Latinx woman. That and the fact that it felt stereotypical (Latinx from East LA with drug addict mom, living poor, etc.)

The "big grovel" at the end was more of a grovel to Archer and Bree for being such a jackass, and that wouldn't mean much for those who haven't read or don't remember what the heck happened, Archer's Voice.

The Bottom Line: Too slow and not enough of a balance to really make it satisfying for me. This is really for those who wanted to see how Archer and Bree were doing, and for Travis to finally grovel for being horrible. His romance was just ok. ...more
