The Good: Found family scenes will always be her strength, and it's what keeps me coming back. The mystery has echoes of her best books like For You and Sweet Dreams (more on that later), and actually lasts through the majority of the book. It's giving me overall small town romance vibes, which I don't hate. And finally, you get a little taste of old faves, which is always a plus in my book.

The Bad: Let's pull out the marshmallows cause it's time to roast this. When the book started I had to check the blurb again because I thought "I must've had a fever dream where KA had said this was different from what she'd done before." Legit questioning my memory. The blurb is fairly accurate but this is not different. Not. At. All. The first few pages were all about the house she was moving into and you know what that means - HGTV time! I know more about the decor of that house than I do my own. The first mystery was a bait and switch - you think that's going to be the focal point but nope. It's resolved and we move onto the second mystery, which ok random but ok. The romance has no build, it's just at this point assumed that they're going to be together, and there's some minor play with the timing of it all, but there's no tension of will they or won't they. it's just happening. When the heroine is assumed to be in danger and she moves in with the hero, you're just nodding your head because of course she is...or you're sleeping, it's a toss up.

This is very familiar, in good and bad ways. I mean, the villain isn't a shocker, the story is told strictly from the heroine's POV and this could have really been strengthened by at least a few chapters from Bohannan's POV. He comes off as a generic KA alpha because you spend no time in his head. There's some action that you'd only get to experience through Bohannan's eyes that you're told about, after the fact. And did I mention the obligatory sexual shocker involving a quartet of screwed up couples to show that even in small towns there’s Anal play that leads to ruined lives? Because that’s a thing here.

The Bottom Line: I roast it but I read it because I can't quit KA, and through the mist I saw glimpses of KA stories past, so this is a VERY, very qualified recommendation only for a hardcore KA fan who loves all her quirks, hints of BDSM, and a mystery/suspense that's more of a focus than the actual romance. ...more

Re-Read, 2024

I knew I wanted to re-read The Girl in the Woods as a quick refresher before the next book/final book since I've only read that once. I just wasn't sure if I was going to re-read this too. It would be my third read of a book that I didn't really like all that much but has grown on me a bit. Romance, suspense, mystery…

Love, love, Love this book!! Romance, suspense, mystery…this story had all the sweet and swoon I could want. It had some twists that tripped me up and there are great supporting characters. I definitely hope there are more books set in Misted Pines.

I want to start off by saying that KA is a favorite author of mine. I one click without explanation as soon as a preorder is up.

I was so excited for this story, as I am for all her books on release, but I had some issues with this one.

First of all it took me a few chapters to get into the story. The writing in the beginning felt clunky (if that makes sense), but once I got over that hurdle things smoothed out.

Interesting new setting for a KA novel.

I read several reviews after I purchased the book. It was actually in my TBR pile for a few weeks and I wanted a reminder of what it was about.
