The central plot of this story is trying to steal back a Monet painting that should be hanging in the Metropolitan Museum of Art but isn’t. Essentially the team we follow are undoing the work of the person/s who stole the Monet from the Met in the first place.
The main characters form a specialised team with the goal of taking back the famous painting. They are an assassin, a mercenary, a thief and a hacker. The romance builds between the Assassin of t This is a really unique and enjoyable read. Essentially the team we follow are undoing the work of the person/s who stole the Monet from the Met in the first place.
The main characters form a specialised team with the goal of taking back the famous painting. They are an assassin, a mercenary, a thief and a hacker. The romance builds between the Assassin of the title and the mercenary. MC Ari is very good at what he does and his latest job is going to plan when he stumbles upon a girl and is hired by her (she’s 8) to stop her stepfather from hitting her. Ari is instantly captivated by the girl and agrees to help her. After ending the threat of the stepfather permanently (he is an assassin after all and he was hired to kill), Ari adopts Remi/Sarah and she becomes an unofficial part of the team. She provides a lot of comic relief and uncertainty for Ari. It is a lot to adapt to a child when your job has you constantly moving and your work is dangerous and borderline illegal.
Ari is used to not letting anyone close, to working solo and his only dates have been getting close to a bit in order to kill - hardly romantic! Throughout the book you see Ari grow as he adopts a young girl who has been abused and providing a stable home for her, as well as working with the team I mentioned above to complete this job. Part of the job is Carter, the mercenary who approaches Ari with the job and the payout is impossible to refuse. As they work closely together to get the painting they start to grow on each other and Ari is confronted with letting someone close for the first time.
I love all the main cast of characters in this story, the thief and the hacker referred to above become the subjects of the next books in this series. Really great introduction to the world of these men and I absolutely adored little Remi, she is able to adapt really quickly to her new life but it’s clear she has a lot of issues to overcome related to her abuse by her stepfather and her mother. She isn’t a perfect happy child because she has never had that opportunity. The men are all used to being independent but are forced to work together to succeed at this job due to its complicated nature. I would definitely recommend this book. ...more
