For someone who has never really been a fan of the fantasyworld, I was completely blown away by the first two books in Rebecca Yarros's epic Empyrean Series from the slow and steady build-up to holycraptastic wild rides astraddle the dragons in the sky!

I read this at the urging of my book buddy Catherine. I don't know what I was expecting. Just another dragon romance. I should have known Catherine wouldn't lead me astray!

This book has great world building and a great set of characters. Part Harry Potter, part Romeo and Juliet, and part Outlander. Can't wait to start book #2. ...more

Violet Sorrengail & Xaden Riorson

This book was an experience. I was on the edge of my seat throughout, there wasn't a boring moment. I went in thinking adult, but it felt semi-YA, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment.

I knew from the moment Xaden's name was mentioned there was going to be some sort of connection between him and Violet, more than what she was led to believe.

Why would a mother be so cold as to send her daughter, who is or seems to be a bit fragile to join the Riders Quadra Violet Sorrengail & Xaden Riorson

This book was an experience. I was on the edge of my seat throughout, there wasn't a boring moment. I went in thinking adult, but it felt semi-YA, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment.

I knew from the moment Xaden's name was mentioned there was going to be some sort of connection between him and Violet, more than what she was led to believe.

Why would a mother be so cold as to send her daughter, who is or seems to be a bit fragile to join the Riders Quadrant? I wanted to strangle her, but boy am I glad she did.

Violet goes in knowing that at least one person was going to be out to kill her for sure, but also knowing (along with the other students) there was a possibility she wouldn't live to the end anyway. She does everything in her power to survive, and luckily, she has pointers from her sister and her deceased brother. One of the things she does right away is form friendships (even though it was suggested that she just form alliances) and that became an asset for her (as well as a hindrance at times). The fact that she spent her life with books because she thought she would be a scribe is also an asset for her. She may be fragile in body, but strong in mind. Plus, she has no problem working hard to survive.

Xaden is a third year and on the cusp of graduating, he is the son of a betrayer (that may not be the name they used in the book). He is Violet's and her groups wingleader. They have an instant connection and end up being connected in more ways than either of them thought.

There are so many nuances to this story, and between the battles, training, and developing of friendships (and enemies), I kept thinking there is more going on than they are being told about.

I don't want to leave without mentioning the dragons. They were magnificent especially Tairn and Andarna. I didn't expect the connection between the humans and dragons to be so powerful and intense. They are basically a part of one another. (view spoiler) ...more

Wow. Wow. Wow. So much to say about this amazing book. It's my favorite one so far for 2023. Everything about it was great, especially the writing, the characters, the setting, and the plot. Thank Gods the next book comes out in November. I know I'll be rereading Four Wing prior to that. And I'll be ordering it in hardback too. Love the dragons on the side and the maps inside. <3 ...more
