I've read a lot of reviews for this book, and one word that comes up again and again is "haunting." It perfectly encapsulates what it must have been like to live through something as devastating as WWII.

Anthony Doerr does a brilliant job of taking you to the different places in the book and making you feel like you're there. It made me want to see the seaside town of Saint-Malo, just to see how beautiful it really is. Definite recommend. ...more

I don't usually write how I feel about a book, but this book brought out so may feelings and emotions. The writing is beautiful. I was drawn to the characters. Stunning. Absolutely stunning. I listened to the book. At first I was not a huge fan of the narrator but in the end I loved him. I wish he did more with the different voices but he reads as I do. Changes in pitch and tone of the characters but not much change in the character voices but a tumult of words--savoring the sound of the words on my tongue.
