The Fault in Our Stars in Gaston Library

The Fault in Our Stars was a phenomenal book. It’s hard to say that I enjoyed it because it literally (“Misuse of the word literally.”) broke my heart while I was reading it, but it was a good kind of sadness that I felt when it was over. The plot was simplistic and touching and the characters were so realistic that I felt like I was reading about actual people instead of fictional ones. The Fault in Our Stars has become one of my favorite books that I have read this year, right up there with Il The Fault in Our Stars was a phenomenal book. The plot was simplistic and touching and the characters were so realistic that I felt like I was reading about actual people instead of fictional ones. The Fault in Our Stars has become one of my favorite books that I have read this year, right up there with Illuminate and The Hunger Games. This was the first book I have read by John Green, and I am definitely going to be picking up more of his books.

I initially picked up this book because I had seen it on almost every book blog that I subscribe to, and believe me, that is a lot. It wasn’t just the blogs, though. People were talking about it on Twitter, too! There was this general buzz about this book and I became more and more curious the more times I saw it mentioned. Then I started seeing it in one of my favorite stores: Ollie’s. Every time I would go in there, there it would be, in a neat, blue and white stack. Finally, I picked up one of the copies and noticed that it was signed… and only about $3. So I gave in and bought it and I am so glad that I did.

Hazel is living in a sort of limbo. Thanks to a miracle drug, her cancer is being kept at bay, but she is far from cured. Her lungs refuse to cooperate, forcing her to use oxygen tanks and for fluid to be periodically pumped from her lungs. While at a cancer support group she meets Augustus, who is in remission. The Fault in Our Stars is the story of how this chance meeting turns into a friendship and a romance that changes Hazel’s life. It also tells the story of a grumpy, alcoholic author; a night of massacred trophies; and how computers do not understand the concept of humping a cave wall.

The thing I loved about the plot was that it was simple and straightforward. I have been reading a lot of books lately with really in depth, complex plots and while I loved them, it was nice to have something that I didn’t have to think too hard about. I could just relax and immerse myself into the story without having to try to figure out if this guy is cheating on that girl with her best friend who is also dating the first girl’s brother or if that girl there is really a vampire astronaut princess. I have to admit, my eyes grew watery several times during this book. I am amazed that I made it through without a full fledged ice-cream-and-tissues moment. There was no love triangle- yay!- and no cheating on significant others- double yay! That’s not to say the relationships in the book were easy, far from it, but it wasn’t a bunch of people running around on each other.

I cannot say enough about the characters. I fell in love with Augustus and I even liked Hazel! I loved the fact that she did not sit around moping about her condition. She got upset and discouraged sometimes, of course, but she was never whiney! Augustus was just amazing. He was sweet and funny and smart and amazing. I loved him to death. The other characters of the book were all written very well, too. I love books where I find myself caring about even the minor characters, and this was one of those books. All of the characters stood out and had their own personalities and feelings and struggles. But Augustus was definitely my favorite, hands down.

So, turns out everything that I had been hearing about this book was true, it’s amazing. Go forth and read it!

Such am amazing, beautiful, heart wrenching story. A fantastic read for anyone. I encourage everyone to read it. You will laugh, cry, laugh-cry. Have tissuues handy. It is worth it.
