I didn't know much about Cromwell before I read the book. My impression was that he was a power hungry man. But the novel portrays him as a complicated man. And although he was ambitious and rose way above his humble origins, he was extremely loyal to those he served. He also took in young people and trained them. I now want to find a good current biography of Cromwell. At times, the book is hard to follow - especially the dialogues when speakers are not clearly identified. There's also a huge c
