Most Book Club members had a hard time getting through the novel. They felt like Les as a narrator was clearer, and had a harder time with the Becky's lyrical point-of-view. Mostly, members who have read other works by Ron Rash were disappointed, and felt like his other books were better.

Not all members were disheartened by the book. One, in particular, felt like Rash accurately captured what a small-town mountain setting in North Carolina is truly like. She said she felt like she knew the characters.
