After all the news about banned books, I am trying to make an effort to read more of those listed materials to make up my own mind.

This review will not be for everyone...

When this series came out on Netflix in 2017, I got towed into the story like a fish on a hook. Here was a girl who outlined why she had committed .... What this story dredged up from high school memories that I had repressed in the name of sanity. It didn't go so far as being triggered, yet I can see why some people could be.

When this series came out on Netflix in 2017, I got towed into the story like a fish on a hook. Here was a girl who outlined why she had committed .... What this story dredged up from high school memories that I had repressed in the name of sanity. It didn't go so far as being triggered, yet I can see why some people could be.

I remember nasty friends that I lost touch with after graduation.
I remember a friend who struggled because her stepdad would sneak into her room sometimes to watch her while she slept.
I remember watching girls fight over boys with Hunger Game intensity.
I remember a female friend who had the same rumor sitich as Hannah but embrace it and wear it like a crown and mantle.
I remember the drug taking and alcohol filled parties with the coordinating problems that they caused.
I remember thinking that there has to be more to life than this...But more I remember the condemnation of family who reviled me for the drugs and alcohol but tried to uplift their children who did much much worse.

This story unveils the worst of high school and how women are objectified with a single-minded focus that just leaves you cold as ice. The further this book went, the more I see why it's banned.

It can be troubling to read how parents totally discount responsibility. We have to accept that "Karens" are universal as well as generational. A Boomer Karen might smile more than a Millennial Karen when asking to speak to a manager. However, nobody wants to admit their child is a monster that bullies others or that their child is a victim in a 'Free Society'. They are kids, 'Affluenza', & the internet are blamed for bad behavior. I guarantee the adults who read this book with skeptical attitudes passive aggressively hurt others in their youth.

13 'kids' set up a situation that systematically strips a young girl of her options. When you live in a small town & people make up their minds about who you are for you, the situation has two variables: either become the worst version they expect or leave.

High School might be someone's glory days (sad) but that is all that they will every accomplish. 13 reasons why tells why a perfect storm of unlikely events can ruin a person's life.

Can't really see why this is praised so much. Having had a friend who committed suicide, leaving no note, I had a hard time believing someone would not only leave an explanation, but would go to the lengths she did, taping her comments, drawing a map, etc. Not to mention it felt like the author dog-piled her woes upon her. I also felt that Hannah, our dead girl, blamed everyone for her suicide, which means there's no real discussion in the book about depression, or anxiety, or...well, anything l ...more

So flipping amazing. Sobbing started when she got to Clay.

I think every high school student should have to read this book. At least once a year. Seriously.
