Probably would have never picked up this book, but b/c he is a local author and I heard him speak my rating goes to three. He definitely has a message about folks moving into a facility for care. Mainly the message I got was that they are lonely, need to feel useful as much as possible, feel important in some small way, and to be loved by their friends and family. I enjoyed this cozy-style mystery. I admittedly had trouble getting into the story at first. I believe that is because I was expecting the story to head in a different direction based on the summary on the back of the novel. I was expecting a dark tale filled with secrecy and pirates. The actual story focuses more on Packard, a resident of the Hilltop House who recently had a stroke as well as suffers from dementia.
