This was the first Austen title I ever read (for a book report in high school), and she quickly became a writer I really liked --and still do, nearly 40 years later! She has a clear eye for character and a deft hand in delineating it, a delectable sense of irony and dry humor, a bedrock certainty about what genuinely matters in life and about how people should treat one another, and a marvelous ability to make everyday life (or, at least, what was "everyday life" in 1813) really fascinating.
