Irish-born Fitz-James O'Brien (1826-1862) --who emigrated to the U.S. in 1852 and died of tetanus from a wound he received as a Union soldier in the Civil War-- is often regarded as America's leading master of the short story in the years between the death of Poe in 1849 and the emergence of Bret Harte after the Civil War.
