I've been so mad about this book that I haven't been able to write a review about it. I'm still too mad about it to write a thorough review but what I will say here is that Mr. Vance cannot speak for all Appalachians and he IS NOT an Appalachian and cannot use his broad brush to paint a picture of all Appalachians. His singular experience should not be held up and typified as a "CULTURE IN CRISIS." This is sensationalism and an attempt to turn a quick buck by the author and the publisher. The au ...more

While the author indicates that the elegy is for the hillbilly area, it is more of an elegy for the United States as a whole. His story wasn't my story as an Appalachian; however, I can relate to what he shares. ...more

Being from Central Appalachia, this true story of drug abuse and how it taints everyone and everything in its path is compelling. I know families who have gone through similar circumstances and whose family members are as varied and colorful as J.D. Vance's family was. ...more
