I hated this book and loved it (mostly hated it.) But I guess that's a sign that it's truly special. Gosh darn it Marissa Meyer, your writing is astounding. What an incredibly heart-breaking read, and yet I still find myself putting it on the favorites shelf. I would recommend, tentatively, since the sadness surpassed my expectations. do you know the feeling you get when you see a thing enough times and you start tolerating it bc fine, you're here, i guess, but have no feelings of real enjoyment? basically a book-in-law. that is heartless to me. i've been gaslighting myself into liking this, but the more i revisit my highlights (reading with a book club), the more i realize how incredibly bland it is.

Heartless. The backstory of the Queen of Hearts. The woman with a tendency to scream, "Off with his head!" in the Disney movie, and a woman of anger and silly madness. I haven't read the actual Alice in Wonderland, or seen the movie for that matter, but I can only imagine she's a bit more terrifying than that.

Our story begins with a girl that has a dream. She's the daughter of a Marquess, but all she wants is to open a bakery with her best friend Mary Ann. Even though she knows chances are slim Heartless. The backstory of the Queen of Hearts. The woman with a tendency to scream, "Off with his head!" in the Disney movie, and a woman of anger and silly madness. I haven't read the actual Alice in Wonderland, or seen the movie for that matter, but I can only imagine she's a bit more terrifying than that.

Our story begins with a girl that has a dream. She's the daughter of a Marquess, but all she wants is to open a bakery with her best friend Mary Ann. Even though she knows chances are slim, she still holds that dream in her heart. Sounds an awful lot like the making of a fairy tale princess. But not everyone gets a happy ending.

Her mother wants her to marry the king. Catherine finds him a silly, foolish man with no guts or backbone. But, "a happy king makes a happy kingdom". When at the ball where the king wishes to propose to her, she meets Jest. The king's new Joker. A man with incredible tricks up his sleeve and an unusual attractiveness for a Jester. They fall for each other almost instantly.

This book was AMAZING! The characters were incredibly written, the small changes in Cath outstandingly placed, and the chemistry full and beautiful. This is definitely a must read. I was so broken at the end, and felt this was an incredible story. I personally believe that the difference between is hero and a villain is that the hero walks from a bad situation with a vow to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else, and a villain comes from it vowing to make everyone feel what they felt. Cath does turn into a villain. Maybe part of it was out of her control, but some things weren't. I'm not blaming her however, because she was put in such a bad situation. Some things just happen. But some things we let happen, even if we can't see it that way ourselves.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, romance, and villains. SO good. All five stars are deserved. ...more

Wow, this book hurt.

It came out of nowhere 😭 Four stars because I found the book a little slow at times, even though the world and characters were absolutely amazing. I’m looking forward to read other books by Marissa Meyer!!
