To be completely honest, I wasn't so sure how I would like this book. Jay's previous works, the More series, hold a special place in my heart and I wasn't sure if this book could top it.

Not only was it an amazing novel, but it made me FEEL. It make me feel every possible emotion. I loved it, I hated it, I loved to hate it, I laughed, I cried, I shook my phone in frustration! This book has it all.

I love the Hunter and red-letter days.

To me this story is more grown up even though the characters are in high school.
Chloe and Blake meet by chance one night.
Chloe is shy and prefers to be invisible. Blake is popular, quite the opposite of Chloe and has a 'girlfriend'. Blake can't seem to keep his brain off of Chloe.

I don't think a book needs to be perfect to be great. I have come across various issues with many books, McLean's included, and still found reasons to adore them, just like I adored Where the Road Takes Me. Sometimes her stories veer into the cheesy, sometimes the endings are rushed. Sometimes the shocking scenes seem a bit unbelievable. Jay doesn’t ever disappoint and despite being a slight departure from her NA books, this being a YA book. It tore me to pieces more than any other book has. Mclean has the rare gift of tearing hearts and fixing them and Where the Road Takes Me is her best book to date I have read of her’s. I want to delve into her mind and ask where in heck she came up for this concept as this is no ordinary road trip story.

This isn’t a fun light YA story about the last summer before they go away for college. This is heartbreaking and painstaking real and emotional. It makes not want to read this story when you get so broken and wonder if it is worth reading it as heart is in pieces . I shouldn’t even question it as I know the author will deliver a HEA in the end some how giving us healing. But I did and this is part of the beauty of this story.

Where the Road Takes Me isn’t a rough gem in a making, it is a beautiful crafted gem telling the story of two beautiful characters struggling and fighting so hard . It is hard not to feel something emotionally for them and their journey which is play out in front of our eyes. Chloe the vulnerable invisible girl who faced more then she wants to say in her life and Blake the sweet jock who sees something special in Chloe and wants to know more about her from the moment they meet.

It not the best first meeting in the world as Chloe is in a position that no young woman should be in and Blake plays the knight in shinning armour and rescues her. A fragile bond starts to form between them hampered by Chloe. Chloe does what she has down for her whole life she pushes him away knowing her past and who she is , they can’t be friends. Life has other ideas as they start spending more time together, we discover there more to these two then we realise.

A heartbreaking past that has shaped Chloe in number of ways and as we deliver into the past and discover this and Blake’s past. These two come together and give us not just a road trip to remember but a story as well including something you will never see coming ;).

There isn’t anything else to rate this book but except six stars. This her best work to date and it was worth the wait definitely for this book. She has definitely joined the ranks of the authors who break your hearts into million pieces and somehow put your heart back together by the end. There is only a couple of authors who do that to me and McLean is one of those authors for me. She has a way with her storytelling and it was no surprised I was in love as soon as I read the first few words. If you are looking for a book that on the fine line of YA/NA and deals with tough real issues, read this book as soon as possible. I’m never the same after reading one of her books and Where the Road Takes me is no exception.

Jay McLean is an amazing writer whose new adult stories pull readers in from the very beginning due to her wonderfully crafted story lines and her multifaceted characters who stretch and grow as Jay takes them on a whirlwind of adventures that cannot help but alter their lives. A lot of her characters have been through horrific experiences, and while they want to give up and surrender to the pain, the consistent message that is explored throughout these heart wrenching stories is that in order to survive, you fight, and when you don't feel like you can do it anymore, you reach out your hand and hold on tight to the people around you who would willingly lay down their lives to make you happy.

There are lessons to be learned in every experience, whether good or bad because without bad times, there would be no “red-letter days” and without understanding loss, there would be no “unexpectedly phenomenal.” Life isn’t easy; it’s a tough road to hoe, but if you find someone willing to take that journey with you, hold on for all its worth!

Here’s to more red-letter days just like the one I experienced reading Jay McLean’s heartbreaking and heart strengthening story!
