A short book both because there doesn't seem to be an extensive amount of documentation for this crime and because Coe doesn't digress much - when she does it is to make cogent points, such as the lynching of two Black men for the "crime" of operating a successful grocery store - taken out of their jail cell at the same time that Alice Mitchell was waiting in hers, contrasting the uneven protections of the law for different races and genders. An excellent book which I wish I had more time to review. Historian Coe makes incredible use of sources to construct a compelling tale of teenage love gone horrible awry - and to connect how this case is still effecting us today (whether we knew about it or not).
My only two quibbles are quite small: I found the "handwritten" letters painfully difficult to read (since they're not exact reproductions of the originals, I was a little bewildered at this design choice), and I also wouldn't have minde ...more

This was a pretty good overview of this crime and trial, though it kept mostly to the surface. This book could've been 3 times longer to go into more of the relationship of Alice and Freda (and their families), the context of the crime and trial within the time in history and location. I did like her style of writing and found it easy to read. ...more
