I don't know that I can really review this book, as this is probably the third time I've read it. I love it, and the series as a whole is one of my favourites. A new adaptation of this series calls for another reread! I loved these books so much when I first read them, and I still really enjoy the concepts and world building introduced in this series. This first book in the series is not as solidly written as I remember it being, but the pace is quick and there is a remarkable amount of information and character building that happens in this relatively short book. Does anyone come out of this series not wanting a daemon?

Dark and magical and scary but also just a good adventure story. It might be slow to start (which I like, personally - give me all the world building) but once it gets going, the pace is relentless. And Lyra is a cracking heroine: fierce and brave, yes, but resolutely a child.

I wish I'd read this as a kid! It was so much fun and I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy when I get a chance.
