One of the few books for adults written by LM Montgomery, this is the most satisfying, cozy read. At the turn of the last century, Valancy lives a dreary life in a house with her elderly mother and widowed aunt, where she must constantly toil at pointless knitting and chores. Her extended family are a clan of sanctimonious killjoys who derive satisfaction from perpetually teasing Valancy about her old maid status. Valancy, a thin, wan young woman, wakes up on her 28th birthday and begins a rebel

I wish I could give this book 20 stars. It's different from Montgomery's more well-known books because it starts with a grown, unloved woman, not a precocious child, but it still feels familiar - the clannish family and small Canadian town peopled with interesting and comical characters, the incorporation of biblical imagery and poetry--not for religious emphasis, but used in such a way that you can tell Montgomery knew and loved the Bible for its language. This is a thoroughly silly book that does not get any less silly each time I reread it, but it's in my top ten comfort reads, nevertheless. If you like this sort of thing (romance in which a repressed young woman comes into her own and scandalizes her repressive relatives by becoming a whole person), this is the sort of thing you will like.

I think this might be my new favorite L.M. Montgomery novel. MAYBE MAYBE.
