If I had read this when I was younger, I have a feeling that I would have loved it, but I didn't, I read it at age 32. And besides being terribly problematic it is so. slow. My ebook edition was only 174 pages, but it seemed to just take forever to read. The writing tends to the "tell" instead of "show," especially in the beginning, so instead of scenes there is just endless exposition. I was a little disappointed with this very straight re-telling of
Beauty and the Beast
- I expected something more original from McKinley, not simply making Beauty a rather plain bookworm. Her descriptions of the magical castle in which the Beast lives were lovely, but the oh-so-happy ending disappointed me.
