I have gotten much pickie-er about the books I read these days. Even though I read a lot at work, I'm trying to remember the last book that kept me up so far past my bedtime. I stayed up until 3 in the morning reading this book. I started it at 10, and read 310 pages in one laying. Finished it in the morning. It is everything everyone says it is. It takes themes, elements, and vibes from Epic by Conor Kostick, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, and 1984 by George Orwell. It is SO good. I love the guy-a ...more

After being told to read this for ages by many many people, I finally got a chance to check out "The Hunger Games," and I couldn't. Put. It. Down.

Set after a civil war ravages North America and turns it back into what is basically a feudal system of 12 areas that are divided by a primary export product. Katniss lives in district 12, the coal district, where she becomes the sole provider for her fragile mother and 12 year old sister Prim following the death of her father in a coal mining accident

I listened to the audio book of this story mostly while I was driving back and forth between Olympia & Seattle for the holidays. My wife & kid were in the car while I was driving. They don't always appreciate my audio books, but both of them were mesmerized by the story -- even though they were coming into the middle of it. It was really a great example of the transcendent nature of a good story. We left the kid with his Grandma for a few days, and drove home in the dark alone, listening to Katn ...more

A great read. Not quite as satisfying as Ender's Game, but more satisfying than any of the movies I've seen in this genre (and there are plenty of them). I read this book in one sitting, so I was obviously hooked, but my enjoyment of it, ultimately, will depend on the direction of the rest of the series. Katniss is a great heroine, and I look forward to watching her (hopefully) overthrow the Capitol and save the world (or perform some similar feat).

"Just as the town clock strikes two, the mayor steps up to the podium and begins to read. It's the same story every year. He tells of the history of Panem, the country that rose up out of the ashes of a place that was once called North America. He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms, the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war for what little sustenance remained. The result was Panem, a shining Capitol ringed by thirteen districts, which brough ...more

Great chilling concept. By far the most interesting and scary book I have had a chance to read in eons. While it is marketed towards the teen age group, this is a very adult concept and provocitive snapshot of what our society is becoming.

This was a great YA fiction - It had an intriguing story and good character development. I wanted to know more about what was going to happen to the main characters at the end. I always love a good story about big brother watching over you and that was undoubtedly provided.
