What Members Thought

The blurb on the back of the book mentioned An American Hamlet but I totally thought it meant a small american town in Wisconsin not Shakespeare's play. Dogs ohmygoodness the dogs, a coming of age story, family. Also the narrator Richard Poe is now my new favorite voice actor!

I would have given it 5 stars but I didn't like the ending. :-( I was totally wrapped up in the book however. An intellectual thriller of a struggle between a very smart 14 year old boy and his charmingly sociopathic uncle. Also the story of family, love and above all dogs and their relationship to their humans. Even though it ends unsatisfactorily it is well worth a read. I devoted a weekend to it and have no regrets.

Long and arduous, but worth every syllable! I was shocked and dismayed by the ending, but realized in hindsight, that it only adds to the mythical thread that runs all through this book. Being a lover of dogs, I appreciated the author's portrayal of the animals' emotions and thought processes - really beautiful. That special connection between dogs and the humans they love is already legendary, but this story makes it even more tangible. Loved Wroblewski's writing style!

Hated it. Couldn't finish. And, I love dogs, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

At 562 pages this is not a quick weekend read, but I never got bored in all those pages so that definitely says something! I enjoyed this book, and if you like dogs and Hamlet you will too. I had heard from three different people that they didn't like the ending but once I caught on to the Shakespeare connection I wasn't all that suprised. All in all I would recommend this book.

Loved it! All of it 'cept the end.. I think even loved the end because it wasn't what I expected. Just a great book.
Loved the story, loved the setting, the voice...
