I think I read this book three times when I was a teenager. There does seem to be a disparity of opinion between those who read this back in the day, and those who read it more recently. I recognize that my opinion is going to be colored by the gee-whiz impression this book made on me in my youth, but I still think it holds up as a great example of science fiction that combines realpolitik, technology, mysticism, and ecology in one big, wild ride. I'd say that this was a lush book, but somehow that just isn't the right descriptor for Dune. Epic, ambitious, complex, and heady as the spice found only on Arrakis.
I didn't love Dune, but it fascinated me anyways, with its creepiness and strangeness, the gom jabbar, the worms, the Bene Gesserits, etc.
I keep re-reading Dune, each time hoping that THIS time, I will understand it all. ...more

Engrossing story. The book works on so many different levels and still remains a great story. Multiple plot lines and all kinds of entangled interests and goals. Very enjoyable and also makes you think. A great combination.
2nd read 2022 - prior to watching the new movie!
Couple of things that struck me this time - The focus on trust, how the lack of it among the ruling families causes the blood feuds and how trust within the Fremen and Sandukar makes them powerful fighters. Ruling house politics ...more
