Set in the late sixties, a kid named Holling Hoodhood is the only one in his class who doesn't go to catchism or Jewish instruction Wednesday afternoons. So, he gets some extra attention, perhaps a big grudgingly, from his teacher.
She has him read through several Shakespeare plays, and he learns concepts and ideas from them, and lots of curses, that seem to relate to issues in his own life.

I listened to the audio book of this one, and there was not a single moment I didn't enjoy. Shakespeare + Vietnam war + tights with feathers on the butt + real family drama - melodrama = a fantastic historical fiction coming of age story. Great characters, great moments of the real drama of growing up, great moments of the EMBARRASSMENT of growing up, all with the Vietnam war and New York as a backdrop.
