This book is totally teen chicklit, with vampires that come across as more witchy than vampire-y, to me. It's a fun variation on the theme, mixing Gossip Girl-type rivalries with mystical rituals and just a touch of creepiness.

Zoey is unhappy at home since her mother remarried a religious fundamentalist, and so she turns to her Cherokee grandmother for support when she gets "marked" with a crescent moon. It also means she can no longer can she attend the regular high school, and she can forget that geometry test she was dreading! She MUST transfer to the vampire school, which is an awful lot like an expensive prep school, but with vampire teachers, or she'll DIE!!!

She collapses while trying to reach her grandmother to tell her what happened, and has a vision of the vampire Goddess, Nyx. When she wakes up, her crescent moon isn't just an outline like all the other new fledgling vampires, it's already filled in. And Neferet, head priestess of the school, will be her mentor. This sets her up for a lot of resentment from bitchy Aphrodite, school queen bee, who Zoey sees forcing her attentions on the hunky Erik Night (with whom Zoey feels an immediate connection).

Of course Zoey is befriended by the unpopular teens, including her Okie-accented roommate Stevie Rae (who apparently didn't bother to change her name to something more vampiric like everyone else), and Damien, who is gay and intellectual.

Zoey decides she must take on Aphrodite, whose Daughters of the Dark rituals are dangerous AND skanky. And not just because she likes Erik, who says he and Aphrodite had broken up a long time before, but for the good of the school. Complicating matters are the appearance of her ex-boyfriend Heath, who she accidentally puts into thrall, and the creepy red-eyed revenants she sees on the school grounds.

This is the first book in a trilogy, and it went down like cotton candy. Lots of action, clear-cut villains, magic and vampires. I thoroughly enjoyed it! ...more
