I really really loved the world of this book. A+++ for fantasy (and real life) world building. The mythology of the Elsewhere creatures was spot-on well done, perfectly dark and creepy with the ideal balance of detail and leaving things to the imagination. Also, having been to Prague, Laini Taylor does an impeccable job of capturing the feeling of its winding streets, spindly towers, and maze-like layout.

I also really really liked Karou. She was a likable, badass character (and who doesn't want

I'm an only child, and I'm adopted, so I have a fondness for stories about girls doing things on their own, discovering their secret pasts and hidden depths. I read them as metaphors saying girls on their own are special, (special in a good way). So, this book looked like it would be perfect. Karou is an art student living in Prague in her own little studio apartment, who somehow knows lots of languages, has blue hair, and has a super cool life for a regular human.

And! There's this secret side

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a gorgeous book. I was blown away by pretty much everything from page one: the writing, the setting, the characters. I've seen a few people mention that they're wary of books involving angels, and while I've never actually read any of the "angel books" that are all the rage right now, I'd be willing to put money down that this one isn't anything like a single one of them. Seriously, don't let the mythos get you down. This book is not what you think—absolutely, 100% ...more

Amazing. Why did it take me so long to start reading this? But oh, the ending! Luckily, the next book will be out in November.

Imaginative, thoughtful, and artfully crafted. The characters and plot are vivid and intense, but there is a bit of playfulness and joy as well. Thank you, Laini Taylor, for the wonderful book.

I'd probably give this to older teens who are thoughtful readers. For parents who may be concerned about their younger teens picking this one up, readers do see characters who are l

One of the best books I've read in years. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is easy to pick up (I was captivated from the first page) and nearly impossible to put down. The plot is interesting and easy to follow, the characters are real and lovable, and underneath is a classic Romeo and Juliet love story that burns with an intense passion. You know, as these things do.

Highly, highly recommended. The only downside to this book is that it's first in a trilogy, and so you'll have to wait awhile to finish

There were lots of interesting elements in this book, including the war between the chimaera and the angels, but the romantic scenes in this book made me insane. SO HAMFISTED. Regardless, I liked the world enough to grudgingly start the second book.
