I'm waffling on 3 vs. 4 stars.

I would give the writing here 4 stars. So why only 3? I didn't love the book. Reading this has made me realize how important it is for me to like the characters I'm reading about. I didn't totally like either of the main characters. They are interesting, but flawed in ways that keep me from being totally immersed in the story. I do like the plot, however, and I'm interested enough in the world building to go ahead and finish the series. I will definitely recommend t

I read this one some time ago and am adding it now so Goodreads stops recommending it to me. I don't remember enough to write a really detailed review of it, but I do remember liking it. I remember intending to go on with the series, and I think I still will. This one had a great narrator, Bartimeus, who was both arrogant and likable. I don't think that's easy to pull off, but Stroud definitely did. I remember being a little annoyed by the footnotes, which I felt broke up the story too much. But ...more
