Oh, love love love. I am so glad I finally read this book, after hearing all the hype, because it is really wonderful. I think this would be a six star book if I could do that. The wonderful:
1. The world building. Brilliant, well formulated society. I loved that it felt historical, and new and fresh and unique all at the same time. The author obviously did a lot of historical research, but made it her own and brought all of the details into her own, incredibly well crafted world.

This feels like a story for an overcast day. Which makes it kinda silly that I read it on a tropical vacation.
It's a medieval costume drama, but with dragon shapeshifters. Politics, religion, music, royal intrigue, formal dances, class and species prejudice, and gadget making. It's high fantasy, with a slightly sci-fi vibe (the dragons are vaguely Spock-like).
I enjoyed it, but it didn't take over my brain the way that I wanted it to.

I LOVED this one. With that said, I have a feeling that not all fantasy readers are going to love it as much as I do.
Some readers will find this to be an interesting, compelling, well plotted mystery along with a well drawn new fantasy world. It has a bit of a historical fiction feel to it, as it revolves around a royal court with all of its glory and intrigue.
