What an utterly charming and delightful novel this was!! I was captivated from the get go and really enjoyed the epistolary form the novel was written in. The characters are well written, witty and fun and I found myself laughing out loud on numerous occasions throughout! Of course it is not all giggles, as the subject matter deals with the occupation during WWII, but the author does a wonderful job of blending the serious with the lighthearted, what more can I say, just a really, really good bo

I just LOVED this book. It totally and utterly lived up to the hype! From the moment, I started reading it, I didn't want to put it down and I stayed up until 2:30 a.m. to finish it despite the fact that I had to get up at 6 a.m.! And it was worth missing every moment of sleep!
I was worried about the format of the book - a series of letters - which I often find to be a less than perfect format. But, this one blew me away. I LOVE Juliet and every single Guernsey character was spot on! I'm amazed ...more

This book, written in epistolary format, was actually quite good. I've started to avoid books that deal with the holocaust aspects of Nazi Germany, because I can read only so much about how Jews and others suffered at the hands of Nazis in the camps. Night was the last book that I read like this. It was for my book club, and I certainly raised some eyebrows when I commented that the book didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. I understand that millions suffered and/or died under the

This is the closest to a 5 star book that I've read in quite a while. The book with the long confusing name becomes an easy title to remember once the explanation of it is clear. A novel written in epistles mostly between the inhabitants of the British island of Guernsey and a young author. The letters are written shortly after the end of WW II and explain some happenings on the island during the war under Nazi occupation. A delightful read in which I became thoroughly entranced with the charact

Loving it so far!
Update: And still love it now that I'm finished. Actually the only complaint I have is that it's over. :( I enjoyed getting to know each character and want to hug them all. I knew it was going to be a serious story but what I wasn't expecting was it to be funny as well.

I confess my ignorance -- I hadn't heard of Guernsey before reading this book. Not only did I relish learning about the effects of war on these particular people, but I also loved the format of the book -- snapshots of lives in each letter. Shaffer's writing style delighted me with wit and character development and richness of place.
