In his "defiantly uncategorizable" (New York Times) debut, Andrew Davidson proves himself a consummate storyteller. He skillfully shifts from present to distant past while balancing the more fantastic elements of his plot (dragons and mysticism) with graphic depictions of the trauma and treatments endured by burn victims. Some critics found the novel mesmerizing, while others complained of awkward prose and unconvincing characters. The Gargoyle's debt to Dante's Inferno echoes throughout the nov

The unnamed character in this novel was the victim of a car accident that resulted in extensive burning of his body. While in the burn ward at the hospital, he is visited by Marianne Engel, who tells him that they have been lovers for over 700 years. Marianne is in the hospital for psychiatric evaluation and treatment of mental illness. She is also a world-renowned sculptress, famous for her stone-carved gargoyles. She describes the love they shared through a series of stories dating back to med

I really like the bones of this book - the intertwining of mysticism and death, the inclusion of the manuscript and sculpture work, the concept of physical versus spiritual beauty - but I feel like the narrative of the story got all jumbled. Marianne's stories were hypnotic and with each telling grafted new life (or old life depending on perception) to a man desperately needing to shed his old skin in order to save himself. The Gargoyle is hauntingly beautiful in its narration. One of the best

I am having a lot of trouble with this. I am listening to it on my iPod, and I think part of the problem is the narrator. I can usually listen to any book - I love audio books - but this guy sends shivers up my back, and his inflections are irritating. But then really, these two main characters - not too interesting. I'm more interested in the physical therapist and the psychologist. I may not make it through.

I really enjoyed this book. It's so beautifully written and the story is mesmerizing. Just fantastic.
