After reading this, my first thought was, "How in the Hell did they turn this into a Broadway musical?" I think I was expecting more dark, if not mordant, humor than what I got instead: a fitfully funny, tragic, and occasionally very over-written memoir of Bechdel's childhood in rural Pennsylvania, mostly centered around her relationship with her father.

At its center lies her heartbreaking relationship with her distant father, which produces emotionally complex and poignant reflections and clean, bitonal images. While detractors cited confusing chronology and repetition
