When I finished this post apocalyptic novel by Kevin Brockmeier, I was convinced that I missed some important tie in between Laura Bryd and The City. I got that all the people that still existed in The City existed only because they had known her in life and she remembered them. But still, especially when she awakens and everything is melting and she and the marbles are toodling along, I thought there was going to be some bizarre, fantastical connection (maybe a meet-up? lol) ...more

I knew nothing about this book other than a very good friend had recommended it to me several years ago. It looked dark and quasi-spiritual from the flap, so I gave it a go, coinciding with an early night to bed, as I have recently been infected with H1N1, dontcha know. Yes, the virus that the news media had me freaking out about finally caught up with me, and I spent all of yesterday in bed, dozing in and out of consciousness with this book at my side.

If the plot of The Brief History of the Dead seems fantastic, critics are full of assurances that Kevin Brockmeier's execution of the tale makes it not only believable but essential reading. Though the premise and title might indicate a moribund air to the proceedings, in fact reviewers find the book astir with hope and human emotion. Different than I expected, different than anything I've ever read (which at this point is quite an achievement). Very imaginative setting. The writing is lovely. Very thoughtful about interconnections between people.
