What Members Thought

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the remainder of the series.
Satrapi is a head strong, young woman (which I thought was great) who wrote about her experiences of being an Iranian woman while living in Iran and later living abroad. She also does a good job telling her story within the context of what was happening politically and culturally within Iran, and in particular during the 1970s and 1980s. Powerful memoir of a young Iranian brought up to think for herself. Satrapi's upbringing was surprising to me - 180 degrees from what I would consider a typical Iranian family. She was sent to Austria when she was 14 so she would be safe through the tumult of her country. She wasn't always easy while she was abroad. It wasn't easy when she returned and continued to make choices that she could freely in Austria, but would get her in trouble as the government became more and more restrictive.

I debated whether to give this 3 or 4 stars & would opt for 3 1/2 if it were available. This is the first graphic novel (although this was a memoir) I've read and it was a quick easy read. The author's story (as a young girl growing up in revolutionary Iran) was compelling however I would have preferred to have read it in a narrative form rather than as a graphic novel.
Because of the format the emotional connection with Marjane and her family wasn't as deep as I think it could have been. I also ...more

I kept hearing about Persepolis and what a fantastic graphic novel it was so I decided it was time for me to get my hands on a copy and read it. It's really more than a graphic novel - it is also autobiography, history and a social/cultural commentary. The graphics are very well done - they are piercing and really tell this story so well. I loved the historical aspects of the novel - they were fascinating & the graphic novel genre really made that history accessible.

I don't like graphic novels, so don't be shocked by my review. When I read, I want to get swept away by the words. To be the language is part of the process. The author and I create the image of the story together. In graphic novels the author writes few words and adds the graphics. I miss the beauty of the language and don't appreciate the art. That being said, Persepolis is a haunting and depressing book. Since I'm about the same age as the author, I never had a clear picture of the revolution

Story was good, art not so much.

This book is definitely not a good beach read. That aside, I was expecting more of a narrative arc and the disjoint nature of the story didn't appeal to me. There were some touching moments and some horrifying moments and some funny moments but overall I just didn't get the wow factor I was expecting.
