What Members Thought

A Wolf at the Table is quite a departure from Augusten Burroughs' usual wit and self-depracating humor. Though AB often manages to make dark and depressing situations funny, this story is just too dark and depressing to have space for humor. I felt, though, that his writing held up well in the absence of his trademark wit. The book is dramatic, and while some might feel it's overly dramatic, I found it fitting. To me it seemed as if AB reverted back to his childhood self when writing this book,

It's been a while since I read Running with Scissors, but I seem to remember humor and hope amongst the horrors. Not here, Grover. Not here, Ernie. My biggest problem is there is no redemption, no lesson learned, no hard-won truths. It just ends with more misery. The father is horrible, no question. But the filler of imagining what he was really all about is exhausting. And to continue a relationship without resolving any of these issues? That is a tragedy.
