What Members Thought

I would give this book 3.5 stars if I could. I really enjoyed this story, particularly since it was local to Sweden, but I don't really understand why so many have given this book 5 stars. Yes, there's an edge to it that makes it relevant and cool, but there isn't really anything unique to the underlying mysteries/stories in this novel that we haven't seen or read somewhere else. Although Larsson attempts to give these storylines a fresh edge via the characters, locations, etc., there is nothing

Critics' responses varied to the late Stieg Larsson's debut novel. Although some considered it clever, suspenseful, and exhilarating, others found it confused and farfetched. Most fell somewhere in the middle, acknowledging its flaws (including a slow beginning, a glut of suspects, and an overabundance of hard-to-pronounce Swedish phrases and names) while praising its strong, memorable characters, dark humor, and inventive plot twists. Originally titled Men Who Hate Women, Girl is as much a cult

This book has some well-known flaws in its story and logic, that I'm not going to rehash here, as well as an amusing, borderline pedantic obsession with technology brand names. You can Google for a list of its sins. It also has a very boring first chapter that is mostly a conversation that sets up a complicated conspiracy that comes to fruition later in the book.
Having said all that, the story is so much fun and Lisbeth (the titular girl) is such a great character that I didn't mind. I really e ...more

What a great mystery! The plot, the characters, the setting--it was all just so well developed. The very beginning was a tad bit slow, but the pace and drama quickly picked up and resulted in a definite page turner that I could only put down when my eyes refused to stay open late at night. I think Larsson is especially good with developing interesting characters who are as dramatic as the plot is. Lizbeth, the girl with the dragon tattoo, is a continuing enigma, and I can only rejoice that the s

I might not have given this book its due attention, because I often listened while trying to go to sleep, so the next day I'd have to go back a bit and figure out what I slept through. Some interesting characters, all with serious, serious character flaws. Quite unrealistic. And the mystery (which had a twist I could see from my house) was over with 1/4 of the book still left to go. So that seemed like a bit of a mistake. Also, the ending kind of sucked. It was just a little silly and pointless,

Despite what I read, the beginning wasn't even slow for me; I loved the book from the beginning and had me mesmerized. Just when one thinks the mystery is solved, another twist in the mystery.

May be better as audio. Loved it both ways.
