This is an amazing story and Lionel Shriver does an amazing job as an author in telling it. There were so many excellent lines in this book that I thought I should write that down and put it in my review as an example of great writing, but then there were just too many great examples. The story is not an easy one to read. Kevin is a high school killer of his classmates and the story is told by his mother who is writing to her husband, Kevin's father. I'm trying to decide how I feel about this book. Cold. Disturbing. Pretentious. Irritating. These adjectives pretty much sum up my feelings for all the characters. Kevin's mother was so off-putting and aloof it was hard to muster any sympathy for her even when she deserved it. Kevin's father had his head stuck in the sand, when instead he should have had his foot up his son's butt. Kevin was just plain creepy. Wow. What a dark and twisted book. I had a really difficult time with the material - there is nothing upbeat or even hopeful in any part of the book. The characters were VERY difficult to like which isn't necessarily a problem but they almost became caricatures to me because there was NOTHING redeeming about them at all.
