What Members Thought

Wow! I originally turned my nose up at this book because I thought it was another young adult, vampire or zombie book.
Even when I found out it was a fight to the death for young adults book didn't help.
But, my book discussion group assigned this book for this month. They did me a favor. A Great read. Now, on to
Catching Fire (Hunger Games part 2).

I was so surprised that I ended up loving this book. Katniss is such a great character. When I started reading it, I thought that there was no way I could read a book about kids killing kids to survive. I'm just amazed that Suzanne Collins made this book have such a heart and soul that was so much more than the violence.

I don't have a whole lot to say about this book because after I give my copy to my friend Joanne, I believe officially the whole world will have now read it. So, I'll just add:
I've heard people say this is their favorite book or the best book of all time and, well, no it's not that as that's a pretty lofty claim. But it is a fully realized, meticulously conceived universe and manages to be the perfect example of a YA book that transcends its origins. Anyone can read and enjoy this and will be in ...more

One of those books that lives up to the hype. Looking forward to the next installment. There's a lot going on here for a kids book. I'm not a fan of reality TV and I'm thinking that Ms. Collins isn't either. Her Hunger Games seems the next logical step in the Survivor/Big Brother programming. Don't want to say anything else to spoil it.

Loved it just as much as the first time I read it.
Decided to re-read this and Catching Fire again in anticapation of the release of Mockingjay . Cannot. Wait!

I waited much too long to sink my teeth into this fabulous read. Initially, I was concerned about reading a book that had so much hype associated with it, but then once I started reading it, I had a difficult time putting it down. Collins has crafted a masterful piece of work, where the storyline is unique, the characters are realistic and each plot twist is well thought out. There's nothing hokey or contrived in this book.

So I temporarily abandoned my Booker reading to devour The Hunger Games. A very interesting YA dystopia that depicts a government-mandated version of Survivor carried to its logical extreme, with a bit of "The Lottery" thrown in for good measure. It's a good book on its own merits, but the best part about it for me has been discussing it with my kids.

7/31/2009: Wow. I didn't expect to enjoy this one quite as much as I did. It was such an interesting story and I couldn't put the book down, eager to find out where it was going. Very compelling book! Definitely a page turner which kept me absorbed from the beginning to the end. I felt the end was abrupt but it helped to know that the sequel is within reach. I really liked Katniss & thought she was a kick butt main character that it was easy to relate to and enjoy reading about. Looking forward

Great book. I found Katniss's naïveté aboutt The Boy a bit tiresome at times but overall LOVED the book. Incredible story.
