After reading Northanger Abbey I think I need to reevaluate my ratings of previous Austen books. This is my new favorite!

Not one of Jane Austen's finest books, but still well worth reading. Things I noticed:

1. I'd forgotten what a brat Catherine is. She's worse than Emma! Going through the furniture in the house where she's staying, suspecting her crush's father of murdering his mother....she kind of deserved to be sent packing in a "hack post-chaise."

2. Aw, I really like Henry Tilney. So worried about the erosion of the English language! Whatever would he have to say about "impactful"?

A tongue-in-cheek coming of age story about a naive young woman and her introduction to society in Bath. Lots of laughs and miscues as she pictures herself as the heroine in a gothic novel.

I actually would give this book 3.5 stars. It's a fun, light, easy read, and extremely well-written, but the story itself is sometimes engaging and other times not so much. At times, I found Catherine's character to be too naive, which at one point, became slightly annoying. However, Austen's satirical slant and her commentary on class structure and social mores gave a good view of what society was like at that time.

Northanger Abbey isn't my most favorite Jane Austen (pride of place goes to Pride and Prejudice - a little pun there) but it is nice to see how JA's writing develops as she pokes a bit of fun at the Gothic literature genre. ...more
