This novel follows a family before, through and after the Civil War. Very interesting novel. I learned a lot about the time period -the author did an excellent job of weaving history into the narrative. It was very difficult to read (emotionally) at times but well worth it.

As a descendant of enslaved Africans who would have lived lives very much like the Coates did (Southern Maryland tobacco farms as well as skilled and semi-skilled urban slaves) I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately ,the whole thing read like a collection of story ideas none of which were brought to a satisfying conclusion.
