This novel follows a family before, through and after the Civil War. Very interesting novel. I learned a lot about the time period -the author did an excellent job of weaving history into the narrative. It was very difficult to read (emotionally) at times but well worth it.
The rhythm of the language in the book was challenging for me to become accustomed to initially, but did not keep me from enjoying the book. Once I got the rhythm, I was amazed at the language and how it boosts the enjoyment ...more

As a descendant of enslaved Africans who would have lived lives very much like the Coates did (Southern Maryland tobacco farms as well as skilled and semi-skilled urban slaves) I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately ,the whole thing read like a collection of story ideas none of which were brought to a satisfying conclusion. I thought the writing was prosaic and the characters were never really explored to their fullest. It was a wonderful story that needs to be told however, "Stand the
