The seemingly endless parade of Jane Austen adaptations (Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, anyone?) may tempt weary readers to give this book a pass. And, really, who can blame them? I was very disappointed in this book. It could have been a very interesting and insightful story, based on the premise of the book. AND it got great reviews. But I found it to be more like a soap opera; I felt it was trite, the characters were too shallow and it was not deeply moving at a gut level. Not the worst thing I've ever read, but I gave it one star since it rates slightly below "it was okay."

While I love reading book reviews, more and more lately I feel I lose something by coming to a book with so much advance knowledge of the plot. Here's another example of how not knowing ahead of time anything about the book really added to my enjoyment. Instead of looking critically for the comparison, I started recognizing a few chapters into the book that Schine was creating an homage of sorts.
