What Members Thought

Belinda Bauer's debut is atmospheric and chilling, following in the footsteps of popular British crime writers Val McDermid, Peter Robinson, and Ian Rankin. Far from being just another installment in the "often-exploited genre ... of crimes against children" (Independent), the novel convincingly brings a young boy's voice to the page. Through that voice--and the eyes of a ruthless killer--Bauer plumbs the depths of evil and obsession, ending with a memorable cat-and-mouse chase on the moors, whe

This is the authors first book. It is about a little boy, Steven Lamb who wants to find his uncle's body who was killed when he was a little boy several years ago. He feels this will make his grandmother happy to be able to put closure to her sons death, which he feels will make himself a "hero" to his grandmother and mother. I felt sorry for Steven, because he really wants love from his mother and grandmother and I don't think they show it to him.

I enjoyed this book- well written and made you want to read more to find out what happened. A boy becomes determined to find the body of his uncle who he believes was killed by a serial killer- he contacts the killer in jail and begins writing to him. Interesting premise and good characterization even if the central character was wise beyond his years.

Steven Lamb's family is indelibly marked by the disappearance and likely murder of his uncle as a child many years before Steven was even born. Wanting nothing more than to heal his broken family, Steven is determined to solve the mystery of his uncle and find the place where he is buried so the family has closure. When his regular digging on the moors is fruitless, he decides to contact the murderer in jail and see if he will reveal the location of the body. Steven is an earnest and determined

I am very morbid, but I really liked that the author tried to tell some of the story from the perpetrator's point of view. It's hard to try to get into someone's head who is sick like that, but it's well done here.

I'm putting this down for now... as I said to Sue, it's too disturbing for me to read right now. The way Bauer writes as Avery, the child killer, is way to creepy. The boy in the story is close in age to my kids and I just need some distance from it. I'd be interested to hear from others what they think. It's gotten some good reviews but it's just not for me.

Blacklands is a dark, sinister tale of a family deeply affected by the disappearance and murder of a child 20 years earlier. Hoping to fill the hole in his grandma's heart and make his family whole, 12 y/o Steven digs holes on the moor in search of his uncle's remains. In a desparate attempt to find his uncle, Steven corresponds with the serial killer responsible for his uncle's death, and unwittingly is caught in a manipulative game. Truly creepy and gripping! My stomach is still roiling with f

This was a well-written story, but I wasn't completely hooked on it. I wanted it to be compelling and keep me engaged, but I felt it dragged at times. The treatment of the main character by his family was heart-wrenching at times, and you could feel his longing for love in the words. Overall it was a decent read, but nothing too spectacular.
