Incredible! This is going to be placed on my "absolute favorites" shelf here on Goodreads. I loved Lev and Kolya together. The way their relationship grew and developed throughout the book had me in awe. I loved Lev and Vika together too, but my favorite character, hands down, was Kolya. I wish I could be more like him. He found humor in the bleakest of circumstances and some of the things he said and did had me laughing out loud, which sounds really strange when you consider the book's subjec ...more

Readers have lately been exposed to a great deal of postmodern historical fiction, stories whose focus on the past merely reveals the astigmatism of an unreliable narrator. Perhaps tired of squinting at history, most reviewers found David Benioff's novel refreshingly clear. With a framing device that serves to warn the reader that the author's life is far removed from that of a Russian partisan, the narrative of City of Thieves lacks much of the anxiety over the inaccessibility of the past that

This is a fantastic story. We focus much of our WWII reading on the American vs German conflicts. This is about the Russian vs German conflict. I mean THE Russian vs German conflict. The Germans laid siege Leningrad and instead of taking the city, they surrounded it and starved the increasingly desperate population.
This book is a buddy story, a coming of age story... a survival story. Its crude and wonderful all at the same time.

I fell into this mesmerizing fairytale from the get-go. Benioff is a confident storyteller, and with few exceptions, this novel swept me along with Lev and Kolya on their formidable life-and-death wartime challenge. Lev, a naive and insecure Jewish teenager, and Kolya, a flamboyant young soldier, are thrown together in prison during the Seige of Leningrad. This novel shares some characteristics of a super hero comic strip, but it worked for me. I was reminded of The Madonnas of Leningrad -- a ve

First off, you need to be aware that there is some crude language in the book. However, I really enjoyed this story. It's not very long but there was a lot packed into it. The relationship between Lev and Kolya is wonderful - I loved watching it grow. I'm putting it on my best of 2009 lists :)

I couldn't stop reading this book. Nonstop war hardship / brutality, but the comradary / bond of the boy 'warriors' is captivating.
