I love Jonathan Tropper and could not wait for this novel. I was not disappointed! Tropper's novels suck me in from the first paragraph. I finished this book within 48 hours.
This is the story of Judd, a Jewish guy in his 30's whose father died. He and his three siblings went home to sit Shiva for seven days with their mother. Prior to his father's death from cancer, he had walked in on his wife having sex with his boss. He was having to deal with the loss of his father, as well as losing his bel ...more

Let me say up front that this is not a book for everyone ... but for me, it was OUTSTANDING! It's wry, sarcastic, witty and unabashedly profane! I loved every moment of the novel. The pacing of the book is fast as is the dialogue! It's ultimately a wild ride that takes you all over the place but leaves you feeling satisfied. I think this is one of those books that could be characterized as 'guy lit' but its so much more! I found myself relating to many of the characters (the fertility issues com

I really enjoyed this book, finding it both sad and very funny, at times. The story centers around Judd, a radio producer, and his dysfunctional family who sit shiva after his father dies.
Tropper does a great job of letting the reader know each of the characters in Judd's family, even though the book is really all about Judd and his troubled personal life. The book's ending also satisfied me, which is no easy feat, but some readers might have had different expectations, and understandably so.

Compared by critics to Tom Perrotta and Nick Hornby, Jonathan Tropper deftly merges caustic one-liners, zany slapstick, and raw emotion in this hilarious yet heartbreaking story. Despite the smart dialogue and comedy, Tropper's plot takes some unforeseen turns, and it soon becomes clear that his characters are more than wisecracking oddballs whose problems can be solved neatly in 350 pages. His ranting and raving notwithstanding, Judd is a genuinely sympathetic man because he truly loves this "d

A quick read. A lot of raw emotion that was really well written. Overall - in need of a fine tuning. It's a bit of a rambling story that may benefit from some tightening up. I expected to learn that this was a first novel, which would allow me to excuse some of the things I dislike. Not a first novel but still worth reading.

I wasn't impressed with the writing. I feel this book had so much potential but fell flat. I am however giving it three stars because upon reflection it did offer a reminder to me... when you feel you have lost everything you can still find hope in "the possible." ...more

I listened to this audio, which made me laugh out loud. The Foxman family is forced to sit shiva for their recently deceased father. While this book could be labeled the male equivalent of chick lit (with drooling over women's bodies replacing sensuous descriptions of shoes), the heart and soul of his characters shine through as does the humor.

I enjoyed this book immensely. While the story does have a thin plot, it seemed much more about the relationships you have with your family members, for better or for worse. I thought the characters were very real, having both likable qualities and frustrating flaws. Sprinkled throughout the book were passages regarding life observations that were beautiful in their truthfulness. I listened to this book in my car, and when I was over I found myself missing the characters and wondering what may h
