I've heard fantastic things about Jon Clinch so I was really looking forward to Kings of the Earth. It sounded like something right up my alley. And it really was a great read ... it was fantastic!
Jon Clinch is a very talented writer ... his writing just made the scenes come alive for me. I didn't want to put the book down ... the writing, the character development, the weaving of time ... it's all wonderful! Sometimes fiction is stranger, and more compelling, than truth--and this decidedly unromantic tale of rural America is just that. With a realism not often present in modern-day fiction, Clinch tells his story with a technique used by William Faulkner and in prose compared to that of Cormac McCarthy; he is eloquent and clear-eyed in everything--from his descriptions of the harsh landscape to the simple brothers' grueling farm life. The short chapters offer unique perspectives from a m

Jon Clinch is an interesting speaker, who I enjoyed listening to very much at the
Books on the Nightstand in Vermont this past spring. This book is DARK..and for me it was very difficult to get a flow to reading it. I am embarrassed to say that I skipped alot and read the ending. Not a good plan but the truth is the truth. I can vote on this read because I bailed.. But I will try another of Jon's books! ...more

Brilliant. This was simply amazing. Gorgeous storytelling. The story of 3 brothers living in upstate NY. Clinch moves around in time but it all weaves together beautifully. Each chapter is a different person and he captures the essence of their character so well. There were many times I cringed as I read about the state of the house and the brothers but it makes the story of the brothers what it is.
Highly recommended. Best book of 2010 for me.

This story of brothers from rural upstate New York really resonated with me and will surely resonate with others. Jon Clinch captures a time and a place that is fading away with modernization and most certainly captures their voice in telling the story of their difficult life farming. Told from multiple points of view, The Kings of the Earth is about the death of one of three brothers who well into the 20th century have lived without any of the comforts most of us take for granted. Clinch makes

This was the first Jon Clinch novel I had ever read -- but it won't be the last. I've already ordered 2 more of his novels. Great story teller! You'll want to read this in one sitting. The story of these 3 brothers will stay with you.

Not sure how I feel about this one. The style and format are interesting and the characters are colorful. It flits back and forth in time and between narrators. As you read it you almost feel like you are getting the story via snippets of conversations you are overhearing, instead of hearing the whole story. It certainly kept my attention, but at the end I wasn't at all certain that I completely understood what had happened.

Every bit the tour de force I'd been told it was. I still liked The Lonely Polygamist a tiny bit better, but really a wonderful book.
