for the most part - i found the first part of the book to be saying that success / genius is mostly due to luck - like when we are born, where we live, if we "got some insanely lucky break" etc... but then he starts to say that any ordinary person can be great (which i believe) but i almost thought that he was contradicting himself a bit by first starting off saying all that stuff about luck. i was left a little confused as to which point he was trying to make, bc to me, you can't say both. then ...more

I was as entertained and intrigued by Malcolm Gladwell's premises in Outliers as I have been all his other books. This one takes a closer look at those that excel beyond the norm and debunks the theory of the "self-made man" (or woman). Date of birth, place of birth and year of birth have as much to do with a person's success as many others things, and there is also a moral to the story - hard work, really hard work and a lot of it, makes the difference in a lot of cases. Read for book club. I enjoyed this book. It had lots of interesting ideas and information. Gladwell's not a great writer, and he really lacks the science behind his assertions, so I wasn't convinced by his arguments. Still, it was a fun book to read and discuss. ...more
